Student Engagement Policy
Read the latest version of the student engagement policy adopted by the London Institute of Business and Technology.
1. Purpose and scope
This policy sets out how students on an Academic programme (see the Glossary, LIBT Quality Glossary) contribute to their own learning experience and to LIBT's quality enhancement and governance. It applies to every Academic programme. Professional Certificate and Executive Development provision is outside its scope.
2. Principles
Student engagement at LIBT is a partnership, in which students and staff share responsibility for improving quality. It is inclusive, open to every student regardless of location or study pattern. It is transparent, with clear communication on what feedback led to. And it is enhancement-focused, feeding directly into the Course Monitoring Policy and Course Approval and Review Policy.
3. Student representation
3.1 Structure
Each programme elects a Student Representative annually. Representatives sit on the Student-Staff Liaison Committee (SSLC), which meets at least twice a year and reports to the Academic Board. This is also how the Academic Board's student representative seat (see the Governance, Management Structure, and Conflicts of Interest Statement) is filled.
3.2 Role
A Student Representative acts as a liaison between students and staff. They bring student views on learning, resources, and wellbeing to the SSLC. They also communicate outcomes back to students.
3.3 Support
Representatives receive induction and guidance from the Academic Registry, and are recognised through a certificate of participation.
4. Feedback mechanisms
| Mechanism | Frequency | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Module evaluation survey | End of each module | Teaching quality, assessment clarity, resources |
| Programme evaluation survey | Annually | Overall satisfaction, feeds the Annual Monitoring Report |
| Student forum | At least twice a year | Direct dialogue between students and the Academic Board |
| Exit survey | On completion or withdrawal | Reflections on the overall experience |
| Canvas (LIBT's current Learning Management System) discussion boards | Ongoing | Informal, continuous feedback |
All feedback is analysed by the Academic Registry and feeds into the Annual Monitoring Report under the Course Monitoring Policy.
5. Responding to feedback
Actions taken in response to student feedback are published back to students as "You said, we did," through Canvas and email. This makes the impact of engagement visible rather than assumed.
6. Engagement for online learners
Since every LIBT Academic programme is delivered online (see the Glossary), engagement is built for that mode from the start rather than added on. This includes virtual SSLC meetings, tutor check-ins, and Canvas discussion boards. Analytics are used to identify a student who may be disengaging, so support can be offered early.
7. Equality and inclusion
Student representation and feedback participation are monitored to ensure they reflect the diversity of the student body, consistent with the Equality, Diversity, and Anti-Harassment Policy. Reasonable adjustments (see the Reasonable Adjustments Policy) extend to engagement activities, not only to teaching and assessment.
8. Review
This policy is reviewed annually by the Academic Board. Any change must be checked against the Cross-Reference Map, in particular against the Course Monitoring Policy and the Governance, Management Structure, and Conflicts of Interest Statement.
