Code of Ethics
Read the latest version of the code of ethics adopted by the London Institute of Business and Technology.
1. Purpose and scope
This Code sets out the ethical standards LIBT expects of everyone connected with it. This includes students, teaching and administrative staff, Board of Directors and Academic Board members, consultants, and other affiliates, across every LIBT entity and its programmes. It applies to research, teaching, performance evaluation, and the conduct of administrative duties. It sits alongside the Assessment Malpractice Policy, the Staff Conduct, Grievance, and Whistleblowing Policy, and the Equality, Diversity, and Anti-Harassment Policy as LIBT's single, public statement of principle. It does not replace or duplicate the detailed procedures in those policies, which continue to apply in full. See section 4.
2. Academic freedom
LIBT staff and students have the freedom to pursue enquiry, question received wisdom, and express controversial or unpopular views without risking their position at LIBT. This freedom is exercised within their subject and must be consistent with the relevant Academic Regulations and professional standards. It must also be exercised lawfully and with respect for the rights of others. Academic freedom is exercised alongside LIBT's obligations under the Equality, Diversity, and Anti-Harassment Policy, not instead of them.
3. Integrity in research, teaching, and performance evaluation
Everyone conducting research, teaching, or performance evaluation at LIBT acts honestly, rigorously, and transparently:
- Research: integrity in research design, data collection, analysis, and reporting for research activity conducted under LIBT Malta's programmes is governed in detail by the Research Ethics and Integrity Policy (Malta).
- Teaching: teaching staff represent their qualifications, expertise, and the content they teach honestly. They do not present another person's material as their own.
- Performance evaluation: assessment, moderation, and staff performance review are conducted honestly and without bias, consistent with the relevant Assessment Policy and LIBT's Staff Conduct, Grievance, and Whistleblowing Policy.
- Academic fraud: cheating and plagiarism, by students or staff, are not tolerated. A suspected case is acted on immediately under the Assessment Malpractice Policy (student conduct) or the Staff Conduct, Grievance, and Whistleblowing Policy (staff conduct).
4. Conflicts of interest
Everyone connected with LIBT avoids a conflict of interest wherever possible, and declares one promptly where it cannot be avoided. The detailed declaration, recording, and escalation process is set out in full in the Governance, Management Structure, and Conflicts of Interest Statement relevant to their entity, which this Code incorporates by reference.
5. A culture against intolerance, discrimination, and harassment
LIBT does not tolerate intolerance, discrimination, or harassment of any kind, amongst students or staff. The detailed protections, definitions, and reporting routes are set out in full in LIBT's Equality, Diversity, and Anti-Harassment Policy, which this Code incorporates by reference.
6. How a breach of this Code is handled
This Code sets out principles. It does not itself create a separate reporting or disciplinary route. A concern about a breach of this Code is raised and handled under whichever existing policy the concern actually falls under:
| Concern | Route |
|---|---|
| Student academic malpractice | Assessment Malpractice Policy |
| Staff misconduct, including a breach of research or assessment integrity | Staff Conduct, Grievance, and Whistleblowing Policy |
| Discrimination, harassment, or bullying | Equality, Diversity, and Anti-Harassment Policy |
| A conflict of interest not declared or managed properly | The relevant Governance, Management Structure, and Conflicts of Interest Statement |
| A research ethics or integrity concern | Research Ethics and Integrity Policy (Malta) |
| A student's own treatment, or a confidential disclosure about wrongdoing | Academic Appeals and Complaints Policy section 7 (students) or the Staff Conduct, Grievance, and Whistleblowing Policy sections 6–7 (staff) |
7. Application and evidence
LIBT records how this Code is applied in practice, for example through the panels and roles named in the relevant Governance, Management Structure, and Conflicts of Interest Statement, so that its application, not just its existence, can be evidenced.
8. Review
This Code is reviewed annually by the Academic Board. Any change must be checked against the Cross-Reference Map, in particular against the Governance, Management Structure, and Conflicts of Interest Statements, the Research Ethics and Integrity Policy (Malta), and LIBT's Equality, Diversity, and Anti-Harassment Policy.
